Quickie Film Review: Branded

So I randomly came across this film last night called Branded. After spending my holiday researching and outlining dystopian films for my dissertation I thought I'd watch one for pleasure, plus I was feeling a bit down but not down enough to watch a Japanese horror.

So... Branded written directed by Jamie Bradshaw and also known as The Mad Cow and Москва 2017, is a 2012 Russian and American science fiction film. This film cray. 

It is set mostly in Russia and it's about Brands brands Brands brands! aaaand this guy called Misha Galkin played by Ed Stoppard. See, I also studied Avant Garde and Soviet film and art so I understood quite a bit in this film that people wouldn't probably know if they were'nt clued up which might make it a bit weird to watch.

Basically Misha works for this huge but obviously crappy capitalist marketing company. He thinks that Lenin was a genius when it came to marketing the revolution.... yeah I have allot of personal thoughts an bout this also when Stalin came in they were just marketing lies and we are still sold today that those times were actual Communism IT WASN'T COMMUNISM anyway that rant is for another blog...

So Misha gets caught up with the manager niece and has an affair and helps her produce his slimming company ad. But little do they know that they are just a part of a plan mastered up by the fast food company to sell fat again, because when a young woman goes into a coma after taking part on the advertising its all OOOO SLIMMING IS BAD HORRID WOAH QUE ANGRY MOB, soo after that its all EAT ALL OF THE FATTY UNHEALTHY FOODS! MASS OBESITY IS KILLING PEOPLE BUT WE ARE GOING TO PRETEND ITS NOT HAPPENING. Like I said, this film is very strange when it comes to fast tracking the capitalism.  

*some spoilers* So then Misha goes a bit cuckoo and and decides that he wants to go away and be a shepherd  His girlfriend (i cant even remember her name and this is probably because like many female characters she is just there to compliment his plot line and doesnt have actual depth as a character of her one, but you know THATS HOLLYWOOD) goes else where after they are both bailed out from jail following the angry mob stuff. And Misha does some crazy voodoo mad cow sacrifice thing because some dream told him too and paases out in the field naked. Luckliy he wakes up in the back of his girlfriend car as she picked him up because like the nice lover she is, she couldn't just leave him there. But misha is seeing things now, big wierd creatures that are ar attached to people and brands, floating about in the air. No one can see them but him, and he eventually gets his act together to turn things around and tries shut down the fat food market with the the vegi market of the east. In the end he tries to band advertising in general... yeah you'll have to watch it to find out how that goes... but he does relise that Soviet advertising is bad though - relise the brands a shaping the masses and not the other way round! 

This film, just has wayy to much going on and not very great actors to be honest. It has good intentions and potential but it was too .... much. Like all the sudden Misha is a swanky business man then hes a shepherd then he is mr vodoo man then hes mr im going to save the world in a swanky suit. BLEGH PLEASE. The film does talk about the power of marketing on people though which I think is important. But yeah... if you don't have patience you might end up walking out half way though film.

I think the script was quite weak too... So I give this one ** and a half stars

MMMmm yeah better off watching something else :P

SusuanaLove's Quickie Movie Review #6 Prometheus

Firstly, I got dragged to see this film, I really wanted to see the Avengers but I saw this instead -__-, so I didn't choose it, I just hoped for the best.

Well.... Prometheus, apparently its allot like the Alien films (Ive only read about them)... Its ... a .... a well shot film i guess. However, it happens to be one of those films I cant stand because the fact people are fooled by the cinematography and special effects so much they fail to see that nothing really happens. And I mean hardly ANYTHING. There's like 3 main locations throughout the film and allot of moaning.

So the film starts with this alien man drinking this black stuff then self-destructing and falling into a waterfall which then becomes contaminated with weird splitting cells, why? Who knows!? So then after that random event it cuts to these people who find these rocks which show a constellation which is apparently an invitation to "meet their maker" (I'm not sure if its was actually an invitation, maybe it was, if it was, from looking at what happens in the end it probably really read "Hey come say hi" but in the small print said "Hey we're dying, so um if you can see this come save us and like we'll probably kill you afterwards"). Logic, in this film, isn't at is best.

Anyway from then on it sounds like a whole lot of people with ether financial, parental or sexual frustration issues, mostly parental. *spoilers* I mean the guy that funds the whole thing looks about 120 and spends billions to find his maker, he also has happens to make a artificial adult son whilst he has an (I'm assuming she's real) adult daughter, (also not really explained).

*Superspolier* So if you've watched Alien, you'll not be surprised to know no one survives this journey except for the Dr. Elizabeth Shaw (apparently that makes this a feminist film 0.o eh nah). We don't find out what killed the "makers", we can assume it was the black stuff, whatever the black stuff was. Anyway instead of going back to Earth, which most of the crew risked they're Ive saving in the end, Elizabeth, with the help of the head of the robot son, program the ship to travel to the place where the makers originally came from, because apparently the planet the landed on was some kind of experimental side dish. She decided this because she wants to find out the truth, why they made humans and left them, then tried to destroy them. The more I talk about this film, the more stupid I think it is, it try hard to touch on many deep philosophical questions, it has so many stories in one but doesn't manage finish hardly any of them. The film even ends on a cliff-hanger with an a little lizardy dead alien emerging alien, so hey anything could happen next :P

There's a difference between making a film that has an unconventional challenging narrative structure and producing something that looks cool but doesn't actually make sense. Or maybe it did make sense but we just didn't get it, who knows?

Moral of this story, if you have to choose between Prometheus and the Avengers, see the second option.

SusuanaLove's Quickie Movie Review #5 (Bridesmaids)

 Personally, I dont think that there has been a great girl film since Easy A. This is amazing. Although its called Bridesmaids the film focuses on the Maid of Honour. Its so.... real... i don't have another words for it really. Its funny and Girl talk or awkward women situations in this film isnt dressed up at all along with mental breakdowns. Im not going to spoil it but its a must see, great script and great line up. It even features Chris O'Dowd who also plays Roy in one of my favourite Sit-coms The IT Crowd. Chris in this is the good guyyyy the good guy that girls dont usually fall for... or as one of my friends said the other day in convo. "Good guys miss out because they're are boring and take too long to make a bloody move" ... i have good guy issues, but thats another story. If enough of you are interested I'll do a post on it lol

This film also reminds you to cherish your best friend I want to watch it again with all the friends i love with Ben and Jerrys and macdonlads. So go see it! You wont regret it! Funny, Emotional, Brilliant!

SusuanaLove's Quickie Movie Review #4 (X MEN: FIRST CLASS)

Its been a long time since Ive done one of these which is ridiculous because I'm a media Arts student I watch at least 3 films a week 0.o lol

Any way this film (excuse the pun) is First Class! actual awesomeness. It goes back to the origins of the X-men, when everyone was young and sexy, and you understand how everyone gets to where they are. Plus! Nicholas Hoult is in it, the guy who played the boy in About a boy, and the lead in the UK Teen drama Skins. He is hot, even with his geeksheek and American accent 0.o damn dude.

 

Yes, its informative, thrilling action packed, but not mindlessly action packed its got roots and motive and depth. A friend of mine always related X-men, the feud between Professor X (who's younger self is played by JAMES MCAVOY!) and Magneto - to reflect the relationship between Martin Luther King an Malcolm X and I can really see it.

After seeing this I had to have a X-men marathon, I mean how could I not? And except for the whole saber-tooth mystery the whole thing adds up nicely :) top stuff

SusuanaLove: Brunette Summer?

Firstly,
I want to say thanks to everyone because by blog has reached over 10,000 hits in just over a year :)

I really want dark brown hair, my hair has always been been black and in summer random parts of it go brown. This makes me sad because I don't like the idea of high light in my hair lo. I tried to dye it the other day and it didn't work at all :( So I thought, well Ill just get some brown extensions :P.

Then I thought, if I'm changing my hair I may have to change my wardrobe a bit. Right now I'm thinking greys an purple, any other suggestions?

Two films I've seen this week are:

Anastasia (I know its old but Ive never actually watched it till the other day) Its wonderful. Although its made by Disney trained people its actually a Fox production, but Disney should take a leaf out of Anastasia's book to see how to portray a real princess :) Liberating stuff

We are the night - I know there are mixed reviews on this feminist vampire film, but I think its great, a proper vampire film with gore and exploration of girl power

SusuanaLove's Quickie Movie Review #3 (Easy A)

Its been a long while since ive done one i know lol

since ive come home from uni ie turned nocturnal, for real no kidding, i cant sleep at night, tonight I've given up trying, im wide awake at 630am, might as well do an all nighter. Any way my new free time means I've watched loads of films. Tonight so  far ive watched Children of Men and Easy A.

I think this film is amazing, yes it is about a girl who pretends to be a slut but so much more too, its funny so funny my sort of humour, totally inspired me to write something :). Emma Stone is an amazing actress and pretty too. Theres this bit when her friend brendan does a little speech about crappy is scool life is because hes gay, it really touched me. He said something along the lines of "i know every one says its going to get better some day but this is today and this sucks" and he looked so sad. people do talk about "one day" alot but you dont know that youll live till the next day so why waste you life living in misery.

This has to be one of best films I've watched this year. And actually I want to go read the scarlet letter now, or watch the film. A is for Awsome :)

btw I watched Pirates of the Caribbean 3 yesterday, gosh that was so long, and I didnt understand what was going on for most of it, no movie should be longer than two hours! 

And watched harry potter and the half blood prince, where does this ring appear from??? (i dont read the books :P)

SusuanaLove’s Movie Review #2 (Toy Story 3)

Yesterday I was back at Westfield cinema again this time it was a belated birthday trip of one of my besties Sia, so it was me, her and another friend of ours. Anyway it was her belated celebration so I didn't pick the movie and it started two hours late so we just watched the next thing that was on, which was Toy Story 3. My other friend was nice enough to pay for all of us including food!

To be honest it’s been so long, I barely remember what happened in the previous Toy Stories. And although it’s more of a kid’s film it was actually pretty good. Andys all grown up and packing for college (just like me!) and it sort of feel that the toys have grown up too the sound like they’ve learned allot over the years, even Barbie sounds intelligent at times. It’s brilliantly written and funny, you become attached to the toys by the end and there are points when you just can’t help but get emotional lol. And I love all the new toys the meet. It was in 3D, I don’t personally see the big deal with 3D and feel that sometimes its used to make up for how crap a movie is, but in Toy story 3 it wasn’t the case. All in all I’m glad I watched it.

I give it *** stars

Ok being at London’s biggest Shopping centre of course I had to “look around” *cough* Before the movie I saw a pair of earrings and a necklace in new look but I didn't have cash for hem both so I bought the necklace and hid the earrings in the shop (because they were the last pair) so I could get them after I went to the bank , but when the film finished and I got back they were goneL.

So to make up for it I went to hmv and bought a CD. Got Ladyhawke’s Debut Album, It’s still playing in my hifi. The artwork in the album is amazing too; I analysed Sarah Larnach’s (the artist) artwork for my Graphics Alevel. I also did a little interpretation of my own based on her work, using a couple of my friends as models

And since we were in the shopping mode we hopped on tube (train/subway) and stopped at Oxford Street on the way home, which was nicely packed as usual. We went accessory hunting here and there; and I found my earrings! There we’re also the last pair in the shop! Anyway got go get ready for work, But I’ll comment on some of your blogs b4 I go J

SusuanaLove’s Quickie Movie Review #1 (Inception)

If you know me well, you will know I really love watching movies! Especially ones with a good narrative and are directed well. I usually pick the movies when I go out with my friend because they trust me to pick the good ones J

I went to see Inception at the Cinema in Westfield, London’s biggest shopping centre with some of my college buddies. The cinema floor only opened a few months ago and this was my first time actually going. Its good venue and college student ID means that tickets are £6.15 for standard.

Dont worry Im not going to spoil it for you and tell you everything thing that happens. The story is like the new matrix, playing with that idea of dreams and reality, not in the same way though. It uses Philosophic and Psychological ideas, and interestingly architecture to. It makes you think about the way you think and how ideas materialise. If you like the Matrix or Shutter Island you'll love this. It was Directed by the same guy who Directed Dark Knight and includes allot of action; It can be confusing at times. It was a brilliant movie, really interesting, lots of action (there was about a thousand gun shots) and had a great Cast.

I give it 4 Stars**** Really worth watching

Overall a great experience and one that cheered me up loads after a gloomy trip to the doctors :P. Oh yeah btw my first online buy using my new debit card (which has to be one of my favourite toys) was delivered yesterday day from Asos.com. It’s a little bag shaped pendent on a long chain. Yes that’s me, early morning, no make up, bags n all. I wore it to the cinema; the bag opens, but what in the world am I supposed to put in there? My friends suggested sweets or mints
